A successful spiral review routine doesn’t need to be complicated or take up a lot of time. What matters most is consistency. When your students know that spiral review is a regular part of math class, they settle into the routine quickly and approach the work with more confidence. Even a short block of time can make a big impact on retention.

I have found that spiral review works best when it’s built into an existing part of the day rather than added on as something extra. It might happen at the start of math as a warm-up, during a center rotation, or as independent practice while small groups are meeting. Keeping the timing predictable helps your students focus on the math instead of wondering what comes next.

Step 1: What concepts to include?

To create your own spiral review routine, start by thinking about the concepts you teach in the year. I find it helpful to list them in the order I teach them, so I know I am not weaving in concepts before they are being taught. Additionally, don’t underestimate the value of using your spiral review time to reacquaint your students with a skill they learned in previous years. Think about the skills students typically seem to struggle with at the beginning of their year with you. I find it especially helpful to include some of the prior year skills at the beginning of the year and also in the weeks leading up to a related unit (like finding LCM before you jump into adding and subtracting unlike fractions). It’s a natural way to refresh the foundational skill before we take it to the next level.

Step 2: What will spiral review look like in your classroom?

Once you have a list of the skills, decide on how you want to use a spiral review in your classroom. Will it be a bell ringer activity or a center? Will you do it daily or weekly? Knowing this will help you decide how to structure the spiral review for your classroom. If you are doing it daily, then five problems might be perfect. If you are doing it weekly, then a longer activity might meet your needs. And remember. . . this isn’t set in stone. Give yourself a starting place and try it out. It might need to be tweaked or changed down the road, and that is ok!

Step 3: Choosing the activities

Once you have answered these questions, you can start to pull activities to fill your spiral review ‘vault.’ Remember, the goal is to keep your students engaged, so including a variety of activities is a great way to keep it fresh. Task Cards, Color by Numbers, Math Games, and digital activities are all great options to weave in. Throw in some more traditional worksheet formats, and you have spiral review that is always changing and never boring.

As you begin pulling activities, give yourself permission to look at the activities you have in a new way. If you have 10 minutes at the start of each day, students might complete one color by number page over the course of a week, instead of all at one time. Whether they’re breaking apart polygons, calculating the surface area of a gift box, or figuring out how much space a storage bin takes up, these skills give them a whole new way to see the world around them.

Today, I’m sharing the unit that made teaching geometry fun and effective. From hands-on foldable activities to coordinate plane challenges, real-world word problems to interactive notes, the activities in this unit make learning feel like a discovery, rather than a drill. By the time we wrap up, they aren’t just solving for area and volume. They’re thinking critically, problem-solving, and making connections to everyday life.

The “Why” Behind Teaching Geometry

Why is learning about geometry, specifically area, surface area, and volume, so important? It’s more than just plugging numbers into formulas. These concepts are the foundation for so many real-world skills. Whether our students realize it or not, they’ll use geometry in everything from designing a school project to figuring out how much paint they need for a wall.

Understanding area helps our students break down space efficiently. This is useful for arranging furniture in a room or laying out a garden. Surface area plays a role in wrapping gifts, designing packaging, or even predicting how much material is needed to build something. And volume? That’s everywhere, like packing a suitcase, measuring ingredients for a recipe, or determining how much water fits in a swimming pool.

You will start with the basics, exploring polygons and their properties, then move into surface area with nets and real-world applications. Finally, you’ll tackle volume, helping your students visualize and calculate the space inside 3D objects.

Throughout the unit, you’ll be able to incorporate interactive notes, hands-on practice, and engaging challenges that push your students to think critically. Instead of memorizing formulas, they explore why they work and apply them to real-world problems.

A favorite part of this unit is the coordinate plane activities. Your students will plot points, connect them to form polygons, and then determine their area. This is a great way to bridge geometry and graphing, reinforcing their coordinate plane skills while making math more hands-on. You’ll love how these activities build spatial reasoning and give your students a new perspective on how geometry applies outside of isolated shape calculations.

Teaching Geometry With a Focus on Surface Area

Surface area can be tricky for some students, so you want to make sure they see how 3D shapes unfold into nets​ before expecting them to apply formulas. I start with physical models, giving students cut-out nets of cubes, rectangular prisms, and pyramids. They fold these into solid figures and then unfold them to see where each face comes from. This hands-on activity makes it much easier for students to visualize and calculate surface area.

Once your students grasp the concept, you can introduce the graphic organizer and practice pages​ to solidify their understanding. Some of your students will prefer working with nets. Others find formulas more efficient, so just make sure they practice both methods.

A game-changer when teaching geometry is the review coloring sheet included in the unit​. Your students will solve surface area problems. Then, they will use their answers to determine which colors to apply to different sections of an image. This makes practice more engaging and provides instant feedback. The quick checks allow you to pinpoint misconceptions and adjust instruction as needed before moving forward.

By the end of the unit, your students will be ready to demonstrate what they’ve learned through a geometry test​. This assessment includes a mix of matching definitions, calculating area and surface area, and solving multi-step word problems. By this point, your students have built confidence in their skills. You’ll be able to see how they tackle these problems with a deeper understanding than when you started.

Instead of a traditional worksheet, your students choose between Truth or Dare question cards. They then solve problems related to area and perimeter while competing for points.

The Truth cards focus on quick, conceptual questions. Your students might need to determine whether a statement about area or perimeter is true or false or solve a basic calculation. The Dare cards push them a little further by requiring more complex problem-solving. They might have to find a rectangle’s missing side length, given its perimeter, or solve a real-world application problem. Dares are worth more points, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game.

You can have your students work in small groups, rotating turns and recording their answers on a Truth or Dare recording sheet. The structure encourages discussion, collaboration, and critical thinking. Your students will often have to justify their reasoning when solving for missing measurements. Groups can check answers by designating an “answer checker” or using the included answer key at the end of the game.

They’re just struggling with the language of math. That’s where developing math language skills comes into play. These skills are the bridge that connects numbers, expressions, and tables with words and concepts. Today, we are going to explore why building strong math language skills is essential and how we can make it easier for our students to achieve.

What is Math Language

Math language is so much more than just the vocabulary we teach, like “sum”, “product”, or “difference”. It’s the entire framework that allows our students to interpret, communicate, and make sense of math ideas. It’s how our students bridge the gap between numbers, words, and symbols. It plays a vital role in how they solve problems and make connections. Math language is the foundation for understanding and applying math concepts.

Without a solid grasp of math language, our students often feel like they’re navigating a foreign language. A word problem can seem like a cryptic puzzle. Tables or graphs might feel disconnected from the equations they represent. This is where math language shines. It helps our students decode tricky problems and recognize the relationships between different mathematical representations.

Math language also helps our students communicate their thinking. Beyond solving a problem, our students need to explain their reasoning – whether it’s verbally, in writing, or through diagrams. Encouraging them to explain why they chose a certain operation or how they interpreted a table strengthens their understanding and solidifies the connection between words and math.

By helping our students develop their math language, we are helping to build long-term skills that will help them in higher-level math and beyond. When our students have a strong foundation in math language, they can confidently approach problems and break down complex ideas into manageable steps while applying their knowledge creatively.

Translating Between Words and Math

One of the biggest hurdles for students is making sense of word problems. A short paragraph can feel like a riddle, leaving your students wondering where to begin. Teaching your students to navigate these problems with strong math language skills is a game-changer. It’s all about helping them understand that word problems aren’t trying to trick them. They’re just another way of communicating mathematical ideas.

When teaching this concept, I like to break down word problems into manageable pieces. First, we read the problem together and underlined key math words like “total”, “difference”, “per”, or “each”. These words act as clues, helping them decide what operation is needed—addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Highlighting and discussing these terms builds familiarity with math language. It also helps your students see patterns in how problems are structured.

Then, we work on translating those words into mathematical expressions. For example, “Samantha bought three packs of markers, each with eight markers inside. How many markers does Samantha have in total?” becomes 3 × 8 = 24. Instead of just focusing on the solution, encourage your students to explain their reasoning in words: “I multiplied three packs by eight markers because the word ‘each’ told me the groups were equal, and ‘in total’ means we’re finding how many there are altogether.” This verbal explanation reinforces their understanding of math language and builds confidence when explaining their thinking.

Consistency is key. The more opportunities your students have to dissect word problems, identify math language, and translate it into equations, the more fluent they become. It takes time, practice, and a lot of encouragement. When your students start to see word problems as puzzles they can solve, their confidence grows.

Translating Between Words and Math Lesson

Dare cards challenge your students to write or evaluate algebraic expressions based on verbal descriptions. Tables and expressions are another area where math language is absolutely critical. I often heard students say, “I get the table, but I don’t know how to write it out.” Sound familiar? This skill requires a combination of pattern recognition and the ability to describe what’s happening in math terms. Without strong math language, your students may understand the table but feel stuck when trying to represent it with an expression.

One of my favorite ways to teach this concept is by projecting the input-output table and asking students to describe the relationship in words first. We talk about the output and then the input. Once they’ve explained the pattern they see, we work together to translate it into an expression. Writing it out mathematically helps them see the connection between the table and the expression.

To reinforce this skill, bring in real-world examples. For example, a table showing the total cost of buying several items at a fixed price. For instance, if one candy bar costs $2, a table might show how the total cost increases as the number of candy bars grows. Your students will see the connection: y = 2x. By relating it to something familiar, your students become more confident in recognizing patterns and writing expressions.

Switching between representations, like words, tables, and equations, takes time. Still, with a solid understanding of math language, your students will begin to see how these formats are just different ways of showing the same idea. Once they’ve mastered this skill they’re ready to tackle even more complex concepts with ease.

Math small groups are one of my favorite and most effective classroom components. These little sessions are the key to keeping the math mojo alive in my classroom. Hardly a day goes by when I’m not gathered around with at least one of my small groups. They’re so beneficial for my middle school math crew.

When it comes down to it, it’s all about personalized attention. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of one-on-one time to smooth out those tricky spots or give them that extra boost of confidence. At the same time, I’m able to build stronger connections with my students.

Today, I’m sharing the ins and outs of math small groups in the middle school classroom. From the nitty-gritty organization to the fun-filled activities we dive into, I’m laying it all out for you.

Benefits of Math Small Groups for Your Middle Schoolers

Let’s chat about why math small groups are so awesome for middle schoolers. First, personalized attention is key. In a big class, it’s easy for students to get lost in the shuffle. In small groups, everyone gets their moment in the spotlight. That means questions get answered, and confusion gets cleared up quickly.

Then there’s the collaboration aspect. When students work together in small groups, they’re not just solving math problems. They’re bouncing ideas off each other, sharing strategies, and learning from different perspectives.

But the real benefit? Confidence. When our students realize they’re not alone in their struggles, it’s like a weight lifted off their shoulders. With a little encouragement and support, they start believing in themselves and their math skills skyrocket. As they work together, they may even start forming friendships as they naturally learn about connections they may have. There’s something special about bonding over a tough math problem and coming out victorious together.

Organizing a Class Period for Math Small Groups

Time to talk logistics. How do you fit those essential math small groups into a jam-packed class period? You may be sitting here reading this thinking it feels impossible to meet with groups effectively in such short periods of time. To help with crowd control, I make sure to meet with a math small group or two during center time. While I’m knee-deep in small group action, the rest of my class is buzzing with activity at various math centers. Independent work, as well as self-contained small groups, are also an option if you don’t typically incorporate centers into your lesson plan.

I make sure to include math activities that have them apply our current math concepts and some review concepts. This keeps everyone engaged, but it also gives me the freedom to focus on my small groups without any distractions. Making it All Fit

It’s really easy for me to say that I meet with small groups during center time, but what does that mean exactly? When I was first introduced to small groups in the middle school setting, I was filled with questions. The biggest one being, “How do I fit it all in during one class period?”

So let’s jump into the nitty gritty details of what a class period looks like when incorporating small groups.

Math Small Groups in 45 Minute Classes

1. Warm-Up

First, divide the class into smaller chunks of time. You can start with a quick warm-up activity to get those math muscles flexing. The warm-up can be on the board when students arrive and they know to get started right away. By the time you’re done taking attendance, they are ready to talk about it. Total class time, five minutes max.

2. Whole Class

Next, dive into the main lesson as a whole group. If you’d like your students to take notes, an amazing resource I use with all of my classes are the Math Doodle Wheels. They break down each math concept into smaller steps to simplify the problem-solving process. This block of whole class time varies depending on the concept and whether this is our initial introduction or we are adding on to the previous day. The goal is to keep the focus lesson to about 20 minutes – but some days are shorter and others are longer.

3. Practice & Small Groups

After that, it’s center time or independent work time. This is where small groups come in. Before I meet with a small group I go over what the class will be working on. Sometimes this is working with a small group or partner and other times it’s working on their own. Once everyone is working I pull my first small group.

When I pull a group I plan to meet with them for 10-12 minutes. Again, I keep these times flexible because sometimes we are done in eight minutes, and other times it takes 18 minutes. I really let the needs of the group on the particular skill or topic dictate.

Depending on the length of the small group activity, I usually meet with one or two groups in a typical day. I may go into the next day to meet with the groups I didn’t the day before.

Other times, I do more of a small group check-in, which usually goes faster and allows me to check in with more groups.

The best advice I can share is this: Try different formats and test out what works best for you. Make it fit your teaching style and your classroom – otherwise, you aren’t likely to keep up with it.

Math Small Groups in 60 – 90 Minute Classes

Now, let’s crank it up a notch for those longer class periods, the ones that stretch out to 60 or even 90 minutes. With all that extra time, we can really sink our teeth into some math goodness. It feels less choppy because it doesn’t feel like you just started and have to stop at the end of class. But we do cover more material each day.

1. Warm-up

Just like with the 45 minute class, you can start with a warm-up activity. Not only does this allow you to ease into the lesson, but it also gets the kids working while you take care of those daily administrative tasks like taking attendance. About 5 -7 minutes is the amount of time I’d schedule for our warm-up.

2. Whole Class

Then, dive into the main lesson as a whole group. You can spend about 30-40 minutes of direct instruction during the class time. However, depending on the skill, you might break this up. If students need to practice steps individually you might use a mini-lesson format that’s followed by practice time. Other times, you can do all the instruction first and all the practice after. The Math Doodle Wheels are handy because they give students notes to refer to while working independently.

3. Practice & Small Groups

When it’s time for practice, make sure to get everyone started on their practice activities. This can by center style, where students rotate every few minutes to complete multiple activities, or they work on one activity for a longer period of time.

While students are working, pull small groups so you can work on reteaching, enrichment, or just talking through questions. With a longer class period, you can generally see the entire class in small groups during your time together. You can spend 10-15 minutes with each group, really honing in on their needs and giving them that personalized attention they crave.

Just like the 45-minute class, this time will vary. You may meet with some groups longer than others. You know your kiddos, so you’ll be able to gauge what they need.

How to Create Math Small Groups

We have our class periods chunked and organized. Now, we need to think about how to group our kiddos. Do we want to look at ability levels? Do we want to look at interests?

One way I group my kiddos is by using pre-tests and formative assessments. This helps to gauge where each of my students stands. This helps me to individualize the learning process for my students and make it more engaging. I can focus on areas they need to work on instead of walking through a concept they have known for a long time. Once I have that data from the pre-tests, I can group them based on their strengths and areas for growth. For example, if the pretest shows a group that already have a solid understanding of the topic, I work with them at a higher level. I can also use a formative assessment to see where students are confused or need additional help. Grouping those students together allows me to clear up any confusion or misunderstanding at one time.

It’s very common to have groups at varying levels. Some students thrive on complex problem-solving, while another group needs to be focusing on mastering foundational skills. By tailoring each group to specific levels of proficiency, we’re setting them up for success and ensuring that every student gets exactly what they need to shine.

Another way is to combine students of different levels for smaller discussions. By bringing together students with varying strengths and perspectives, you’re creating a dynamic learning environment where everyone benefits. Maybe the advanced students can offer insights and support to their peers, while the struggling students gain confidence and new strategies from their classmates. It’s a win-win situation!

Purposes of Small Groups

Now that our math small groups are all set up and ready to roll, let’s talk about what we do during those precious moments together. Let’s talk intervention. For our students who need a little extra support, small groups are like a lifeline. We dive deep into the concepts they’re struggling with, breaking them down step by step until they’re feeling confident. We can simplify the process of the concept, which makes math approachable for our students. It’s all about meeting them where they’re at and giving them the tools they need to succeed.

Sometimes, we’ve got students who are ready to zoom ahead. That’s where enrichment comes into play. We crank up the challenge level, throwing curveballs and brain teasers their way to keep those sharp minds engaged and hungry for more. For instance, we could introduce real-world applications of math concepts, like analyzing data from sports statistics. The goal is to push these students beyond their comfort zones, sparking their curiosity and taking on more ownership of their learning.

Small groups can also be a time to check in on how students are doing with the current topic. Some students are more likely to ask questions or participate in a small group setting. So making sure they have that available will make their entire math experience more productive.

Math small groups are a true testament to the power of practice. In small groups, we can zero in on specific skills and concepts, drilling down until they’re second nature. Whether it’s extra notes, hands-on activities, or targeted practice problems, every minute counts. Each activity brings us one step closer to math mastery with consistent exposure to the concept.

Small Group Activities

To help with reinforcement, practice, and review, I have a variety of activities that I love to use with small groups (although I love to use them with the whole class too).

Task Cards

My first go-to activity is using Footloose task cards. When I use them as our whole class activity, I will carefully choose a few cards that they will do in a small group setting with me. These task cards can be spread out around the room but work just as well in math small groups. They cover a wide range of math concepts, but each set has 30 cards. I make sure to pick cards that cover the different steps or concepts we are working on. Additionally, I might choose some of the trickier cards so I can see how students work through those. The remaining cards are completed during independent work time.

Another great thing about using task cards is that I can quickly and easily pull a few cards for almost any skill or concept. So whether it’s a reteaching small group or an enrichment group, task cards are an easy way to have just what I need without feeling I am preparing another lesson.

Math Games

Another resource I love to use is Truth or Dare Math Review Games. My students love playing these review games together to practice their math concepts. Not only does this make them perfect for center time, but they work well with small groups too.

The game cards are split into two groups. Truth cards are going to ask true and false questions about the vocabulary and basic steps of the math concept. Dare cards ask more challenging questions and encourage more application. The different types of cards have varying point values, which amps up the motivation to try their best to solve the problems.

Math Wheels

Sometimes our small group time is focused on completing the practice problems found on the outside of the math wheel. This is one I generally do with students who are having a hard time with the concept. The reason I do this is because I want their math wheels to be complete and accurate since we often refer back to them during the year.

Activities for Students Not Meeting in Small Groups

One part that always made me nervous when I started with small groups was managing the rest of the class. It could easily become overwhelming! Over the years, and with support from teammates, I’ve learned a few tricks to keep everyone engaged and on track.

First, there’s the classic independent seat work. Students tackle assignments or practice problems on their own. It’s a chance for them to demonstrate their understanding and work at their own pace, all while building those essential study skills.

We can kick it up a notch with some small group work of their own. They could be collaborating in mini-groups to tackle a challenging task or project. It’s like a mini-replica of what’s happening in my small groups, but they’re the ones calling the shots and working together to find solutions. This is where I would use those task cards and review games I mentioned earlier.

Let’s not forget about the magic of technology. With computers at their fingertips, students can engage in educational games, color-by-number digital activities that reveal a picture as they practice skills, or online websites that provide practice problems, like IXL. These digital options are tailored to their individual needs.

So, whether it’s independent seat work, small group collaboration, or computer-based learning, one thing’s for sure: there are multiple ways in my classroom to stay engaged with math. With a variety of engaging activities to choose from, every student has the chance to shine and make the most of their time while I’m focused on my small groups.

What Are Math Doodle Wheels?

I’m standing at the front of my class and all I see are blank stares, math nerves, and a whole bunch of “I’d-rather-be-anywhere-else” vibes. My students were going through the motions of note-taking, but it was clear, the info wasn’t sticking. That’s when the lightbulb moment happened, and Math Doodle Wheels were born!

I wanted notes to be more than just a checkmark on the to-do list. I wanted them to be a trusty sidekick, a go-to guide during units and review sessions.

So, I crafted these wheels where math concepts are broken down into bite-size sections of the wheel, vocab gets its VIP definition moment, and each step is practiced with examples. Plus, there’s space for some extra practice. The secret? We’re color-coding and doodling symbols as we go to help them remember the steps and vocabulary. How I Teach Types of Triangles

We’re diving headfirst into the world of triangles, and it all begins right at the heart of our Types of Triangles Math Wheel. I gather my students around, and we start chatting about the six main players in the triangle game – equilateral, scalene, acute, obtuse, right, and isosceles. Now, here’s the math magic. No matter how different these triangles are, their angles always add up to 180°. I have my students write that 180° right in the center of our wheel to be a constant reminder.

With the center complete, I kick off the grand tour of the wheel. The first thing we discuss is that there are two ways we can classify triangles. We can classify them by their sides and we can classify them by their angles. To keep this in mind, we tackle the three types of triangles classified by their sides first, then we move on to the three types of triangles classified by angles. With that explanation, we have now taken 6 types of triangles and grouped them into two groups of three and made them a little easier to understand.

Sections of the Types of Triangles

Equilateral Triangle

I explain that this triangle is known for having three equal sides, which we jot down in that section. I draw three hash marks, one on each leg of the triangle, to show that they are equal.

To give them an example of number measurements, I write 6 meters on all three sides. I like starting with equilateral because it’s the least intimidating since all three sides are the same measurements.

Scalene Triangle

Now, onto the scalene triangle.

I kind of think of it as the rebel of the triangle crew. It’s the complete opposite of our equilateral triangle because it plays by its own rules with no equal sides.

We fill in the blank in our notes section. Then, it’s example time. I draw my trusty triangle and label it with the following measurements: 5 cm on the short leg, 7 cm on the top leg, and 10 cm on the bottom leg. Why? To show my students how each side has its unique length.

Isosceles Triangle

Now, we wrap up our note-taking adventure with the isosceles triangle.

An isosceles triangle is all about the buddy system, boasting two equal sides. In our triangle example, I draw single hash marks on the left and right legs because they’re equal measurements. I label both legs with 4 feet, emphasizing their equal status. Now, I draw two hash marks on the bottom leg, signaling that its measurements are playing solo. I label 6 feet for the bottom leg, driving home the point that it’s not on the equal side with the left and right legs.

Acute Triangle

Next up is the acute triangle. I walk my students through jotting down the key detail that all three angles inside an acute triangle are less than 90°.

I draw two examples to show my students a couple of different scenarios they may encounter. In the first triangle, I sketch a curved line at each corner, representing an angle, and drop 60° in each. We add each of the three angles, each at 60°, sum up to 180°, sealing the deal that triangles have a total of 180° inside.

I draw another triangle to explain that acute triangles won’t always have the same angle measurements. In this second one, I draw those curved lines again and jot down 70°, 60°, and 50° in the corners. Quick adding by my eager students confirms the angles total to 180°.

Obtuse Triangle

In our next section, we dive into the world of the obtuse triangle.

For a triangle to earn the “obtuse” badge, it needs to boast one obtuse angle, meaning one angle must be greater than 90°.

In my example, I draw an obtuse triangle.

I draw the curved line to represent the angle in the top angle inside the triangle and write 120°.

We talk about how we can check that this is obtuse by noting how it’s a number larger than 90.

Right Triangle

We move to the right triangle section.

We review what makes a right angle, which is when a 90° angle is formed at the intersection of two perpendicular lines. I have my students write down that one angle must measure 90°. Then, in the triangle, we practice drawing the square symbol where the two lines intersect to represent 90°.

What’s Next?

Once we wrap up our note-taking session, it’s time to put our knowledge to the test by tackling the examples scattered around the math doodle wheel.

I pre-select a few examples, modeling to my students my thought process and reasonings for classifying which triangles to which measurements. After a couple of examples, I give the steering wheel to my students. They become the teacher and start leading me through the steps for a few examples. Then, I partner them up to complete the remaining practice examples. I set a timer so we have time to check their answers and talk through their reasoning.

After conquering those practice problems, I give my math enthusiasts a little artistic freedom. They go back into their notes, adding splashes of color and extra symbols to etch the differences between the triangles into their memory. It’s a personal touch that not only triggers those “aha” moments but also makes math feel like a comfortable space. The math doodle wheel isn’t about bombarding them with gibberish and 50 problems. It’s all about breaking the skill into bite-sized chunks, creating a handy reference tool that’ll be their math companion throughout the year!

More Resources for Types of Triangles

Once I complete notes with my students, I want them to be applying what they have learned. If you don’t use it, you lose it, right? When I am planning practice activities, I want to make sure they are interactive and allow everyone to have a seat at the table. Math anxiety is real! It’s important to be aware of all the emotions your kiddos may be feeling when it comes to math. With that in mind, I have included some types of triangle activities that have students practicing the skills in a collaborative, low-intensity manner.

Classifying Triangles Footloose Math Task Cards Activity and Math Wheel

An awesome classroom activity I use with my students to review types of triangles and to get them up and moving is my Types of Triangles Footloose cards.

Footloose isn’t just your typical sit-and-listen routine. I hand out these cards, and suddenly, we’re not just classifying triangles by sides and angles.

We take it a step further by finding those missing angles and sides like geometry detectives. Sometimes, alarms go off in my students’ heads when they discover a missing angle.

We pull out our math doodle wheels and remind ourselves that all three angles within a triangle equal the grand number of 180!

I tend to shake up the delivery of the task cards because sometimes I have them posted around the classroom ahead of time. Then they travel around to each card with a partner to solve and record answers on their paper.

With that being said, Footloose isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. You can roll it out for the whole class, turn your class into an interactive experience, use it in small groups, or throw it into center rotations. It’s flexible, it’s fun, and it’s got the whole class moving!

Triangles Color by Number Activity Missing Angles and Sides

My Triangles Color by Number activity is a low-intensity math activity for different types of angles and missing angles with a dash of color. Students solve problems while turning their answers into masterpieces!

My students tackle 20 problems that dive deep into triangle types. Problems range from finding missing side lengths and angle measures to calculating the perimeter of triangles. Instead of the usual pencil and paper routine, they find their solutions on a coloring sheet/section.

5. When they make their choice, students read the question out loud to the group. Then they roll up their sleeves and start working on the card. They record their answers on their recording sheet. They then share their responses with the group.

I’m all about fostering discussions in my classroom. So, after they share their answers, I tell my students to chat about whether or not they agree.

Trust me, this leads to effective discussions that take their understanding to the next level.

They earn one point for every Truth card they tackle and get right. They’re in for a bigger challenge when they decide to take on those daring Dare cards. It’s totally worth it because those can be worth 2 or 3 points each.

Now, here’s the twist – they don’t know how many points they’ve scored until they flip the card. It’s a surprise within a surprise!

After all the answers have been double-checked and the points are neatly recorded, it’s time for the moment of truth. Students grab their calculators or do some mental math, and they add up their points. The one with the most points is the winner. If you’re able to award the winners with prizes, that adds to the engagement level. However, it’s definitely not a necessity!

Finding that balance between introducing and teaching new topics and giving students opportunities to practice is a good way to divide up your time in the classroom. Unless you are teaching and introducing topics using a small group format, these are your whole class teaching times. Once you have taught a skill and done some independent practice, it’s time to give students a chance to practice. This is where math centers come in. This ebb and flow allows you to weave math centers into a class that has traditionally been teacher-led.

Want to make math centers a regular part of your classroom experience? Go for it! Plan your week in a way that math centers become a consistent activity. A weekly routine keeps students engaged and knowing what to expect.

Monthly Reviews

Use math centers as a monthly review tool. It’s a fantastic way to revisit what’s been covered and solidify those concepts. Think of it as a math “refresher” course!

End of Unit Reviews

While much of your teaching style remains the same with this format, build in 2 – 3 days before an exam for review through math centers. Students can rotate through activities that will help them review all the skills from the unit. You’re also freed up to do some small group reteaching with students who need it.

Assessment Integration

Worried about the accountability with math centers? Want students to take math centers seriously? Make them count towards assessments. It’s a great motivator, and it ensures students give it their all. You might allow students to use their center activity as “open notes” on their quiz or test. Or, properly completed math centers can be a +5 on their test grade.

Student Choice

Let students choose their math center activities based on their interests. This sparks their curiosity and gives them a sense of ownership over their learning journey. Setting up early finisher math centers is a great way to allow students to choose whatever skill or concept they would like to work on.

What’s your favorite type of math activity to have your middle school math students work on?

For me, it’s almost always been math problem solving. This could include word problems that apply specific math concepts, word problems that incorporate a variety of math concepts, logic puzzles, word problems that focus on problem solving strategies (create a table,  make an organized list, find a pattern, work backwards, draw a picture, etc). 

I also love using problems that have more than one correct solution, so students can share the thinking that leads to different answers.

Cooperative Groups for Math Problem Solving

When we work on math problem solving activities, I often have students work together, so they can model for each other and share/listen to each others’ thinking and reasoning.

I wrote the “Party Planning” problem shown here to give students practice with:

• decimal operations and 
• solving problems with multiple solutions

To solve the problem, students worked with one or two partners to come up with combinations of foods that Reggie could buy for a party. 

To find their solutions, students needed to:

• add decimals 
• multiply if they were going to include several of one item
• possibly subtract, to revise their answer if their total was over $50

Student Conversation and Feedback

I loved listening to the kids’  conversations as they worked on this problem. I heard comments like

• “No one eats pretzels” 
• “I’d choose candy and chips over pretzels,” and so on.

The students had a few important questions for me, as they were pretty serious about this planning.
They asked:

• “Is this a “regular” party or like a sleep-over party, because the kind of food would depend on how long the party is.”
• “How big is the container of ice cream?”
• “How big is the bag of candy?”

In addition to these questions, there were a few other factors that made me realize I needed to revise the problem, and add more details/requirements.

• For example, one student said, “Let’s just get 50 bottles of soda!”
• Another group of students decided that having 5 fruit trays and no other food would be a good plan (even though the problem stated that Reggie wanted a variety of food items).

Making Math Stations Work in 40-Minute Class Periods

I taught elementary school for 12 years and I loved my math centers (or math stations, as you might call them)! They were great. They provided my students with focused practice time for the skills we had learned.  When I moved to middle school I wanted that same thing for my students.  But I found myself asking “Can I have math centers in middle school?” Keep reading to find out how I made it happen.

Math class was always an hour, and we had five computers in the classroom, so having a computer center was always an option.

Then I moved to middle school. Math class was 44 minutes (minus time for switching classes…..so more like 40 minutes). How could I fit more than two math station rotations in a 40-minute period?? 

I longed for block scheduling (our district has never had it)…that would make it so much easier to complete math center rotations!

For the first year or two of middle school, I kind of gave up on the idea of math centers…the activities I wanted students to complete took longer than 20 minutes. So, the class period would be enough time to finish two math station rotations, IF students started the second they walked in the door and then had no time to clean up/organize at the end of class.

But eventually I needed to get my math centers back, so I experimented with a few different set-ups. After a little trial and error I landed on a structure that works and makes math centers in middle school work.

Math Center Structure

I willingly admit that I have not found a perfect solution….40 minutes is just too short a time-period for math class!

However, I’ve figured out what works for me, and maybe it can work for you too, if you also have short math classes.  It might not be perfect but there are so many benefits to having math centers in middle school math classes.  So here’s the solution I use.

My math centers are:

• One center per day
• 30 minutes a day
• For 3-4 days, depending on the topic

Assigning Math Center Groups and Tasks

There are many ways to group students and assign tasks, but these are the grouping/activity options I normally stick to:
1) When we only do three days, I create six groups and prepare two sets of materials for some tasks.

• Students will all complete three tasks over the course of the three days, but they might not all complete the same three…it depends on the topic, their needs, and my goals.
• The image below has two different examples of how I might assign the tasks.

2) When we do four days, I create four to six groups (if my class size is the usual 27-30).

• If I have only four groups, I usually assign them each a different task and then rotate through those tasks over the four days.
• If I have five or six groups, then I’ll have two groups complete the same task on the same day, similar to the three-day example.

Fast Finishers During Math Centers

My math students are not ability-grouped, so they finish activities at various times.

• I decided that I have to be ok with some students/groups finishing early and others not finishing (or finishing during a free, non-math period).
• Doing one math center a day, for about 30 minutes allows for some flexibility here.

If group members finish early, they can do the following:

1) Finish another center activity, if they had something unfinished.  

2) Complete a math color by number from our “finished early” resource bin.

3) Answer the math trivia cards – a set that isn’t one of the center activities. (click here to grab this free resource!)

4) Use the pentominoes that we use on the first day of math class – there are always students who want to complete this challenge!

5) Use a technology source for additional math practice, if extra computers are available.

Before Using Math Centers in Middle School

Just like when I was in an elementary classroom, before we start using math centers in middle school, I make sure students have a complete understanding of expected behavior AND of the activities they’ll be completing.

• We complete the different activities together with different concepts at the beginning of the year, and then I use those activities in the centers, using some of the same ones each time.

Six Activities for Math Centers in Middle School

The math center activities I typically use are:

1) Footloose task cards:
Students are up and around the room for this, so I typically assign only one or two groups per day. (I’ve added a bunch of Google Slides versions of these for more options:-) Read more about Footloose activities here.

2) Math Truth or Dare Game
(with paper and pencil):
This version is a group game, so I only assign one group per day, for less “noise” in the room. They have to talk, and they definitely have fun with this one! 

OR Google Truth or Dare:
I created digital versions of these math games. This allows two different groups to complete the same activity, but one group can use whatever technology we have available.

• This version could be played by group members independently or in teams.

3) Color by Number:
This is a quiet activity that provides some self-checking practice. Students can also check answers with their group members if they’d like.

• (Students often don’t finish the coloring during the center time, so I have them complete all the problems first and then color….they can come back to the coloring if they finish an activity early on another day.)

• I’ve added digital versions of these….great for students who are absent and easy to use the activity with two different center groups.

4) Math Doodle Wheels:
I use this as a teacher-guided center sometimes, but I can also use the wheels as an independent center for review – students can copy the notes and complete the practice on their own.

• Coloring is similar to color by number – that part is last and they can return to it later.

• These math wheels get added to students’ binders to keep for the year, so they can finish coloring any time they finish something early.

5) Problem Solving: 
I make this a collaborative center (I love when students have math conversations!), but it could also be independent work. 

6) Math Trivia Cards:
This is a fun activity to practice more general knowledge, with less calculation involved.

• Students can just quiz each other and share correct answers, or they can record their answers to be checked later. 
• There are three sets: Numbers and Operations, Geometry, and Algebraic Concepts (link to download them is below.)

As you can see, some of the center rotations require students to work together, while others allow them to work independently.

• I like to have this mix, so students can share ideas and solving methods but also have time to work with the concepts and skills on their own. 
• I also like to compare the work they did alone with the work they completed with others:-)

What to Do With Finished Math Center Work

When students complete a center assignment, I have them put that assignment into a specific tray in my classroom.

• I go through the trays at the end of each day and use my checklist to record who has handed in their work.
• I do grade all of the math center activities….sometimes it takes me quite a while!!

Activity Sets for Math Centers in Middle School

I have sets of 4-5 math center activities for each of the topics below, so these are the ones I use/have used. However, I don’t use all of them every year…because, time! 

I pick and choose based on student needs, time of year, etc.
