When you think about learning, the first image that probably comes to mind is a teacher at the front of the room leading the lesson. But what if the most powerful learning moments happen when our students teach each other? That’s exactly what peer teaching, sometimes called “peer learning” or “peer-to-peer learning”, is all about. I loved seeing this in action in my own classroom. Whenever I gave my students opportunities to explain, correct, and guide each other, I noticed their confidence grow and their understanding deepen. Peer teaching wasn’t just another strategy to check off a list. It became one of the most effective ways to help my students truly own their learning.

What is Peer Teaching?

Peer teaching happens when our students take an active role in teaching their classmates. It can be as simple as explaining a math problem to a partner or as structured as working through a carefully designed peer activity. Although some teachers have different names for this concept, the heart of the idea is the same. Our students learn by teaching and supporting each other.

When I first introduced this idea, I realized that my students were also practicing communication, critical thinking, and leadership. Explaining why an answer was correct or incorrect required them to understand the concept at a deeper level. It also gave their classmates the chance to hear a peer’s perspective, which often made tricky skills click in a new way.

Over time, I found that peer teaching worked well in both math and ELA. Whether my students were discussing problem-solving steps or analyzing a piece of text, their learning was stronger when they explained their thinking to someone else.

The Benefits of Peer Teaching

The list of benefits that come with peer teaching is long, but let’s start with the big ideas. Our students retain more information when they actively engage with it. Listening to a lecture is one thing, but having to explain why a sentence needs a comma or how to solve a fraction problem makes the learning stick. I often saw my students master skills more quickly when they were responsible for teaching them to someone else.

Peer learning also builds collaboration and confidence. Some of your students who are usually quiet in whole-class discussions will come alive when working with a partner. They feel safe taking risks, asking questions, and even making mistakes because their partner is learning alongside them. It also gives your high-achievers the challenge of breaking down their thinking into clear explanations.

Peer teaching creates accountability in our students. Your students will know their partner is depending on them. With this knowledge, they are more motivated to pay attention and stay engaged. Instead of us, the teachers, being the only ones pushing them forward, they begin to push each other in the best way possible.

Peer Teaching in My Daily Language Program

One of my favorite resources to recommend when using peer teaching is my Daily Language program. Each day, your students receive partner sheets with two sentences that need editing. One partner works on one sentence while their partner works on the other. Then, they take turns explaining their corrections and identifying parts of speech for each other.

To help this go smoothly, the pages are labeled for Partner A and Partner B. Each page has one sentence that needs correcting and one sentence that is complete with the answers. Partner A’s sentence that needs correcting is the already corrected sentence for Partner B, and vice versa. This allows each person to explain their correction and the reasoning, while the other student checks their answers. The process keeps both students actively engaged in the entire activity.

This back-and-forth creates powerful peer-to-peer learning. Your students aren’t just fixing sentences. They are explaining why corrections mattered. Instead of just filling in all the answers, your students become the teachers. They guide each other through tricky grammar, irregular verbs, and punctuation rules. The discussions are memorable, and the act of teaching reinforces their own understanding.

As you use this resource, you will see a shift in how much more confident your students become over time. When my students could explain the difference between “telled” and “told” to their partner while backing it up with grammatical reasoning, I knew peer teaching was making a lasting impact.

Strategies for Peer Teaching in the Classroom

If you’re ready to try peer teaching in your own classroom, here are some strategies that worked well for me. You want to start small with partner activities. Assign each of your students a specific role, such as “explainer” and “checker.” This helps them stay focused and ensures that both partners contribute. My Daily Language program is built on this idea, with clear responsibilities for Partner A and Partner B.

Model the process first. I found it important to demonstrate what peer learning looked like before expecting my students to dive in on their own. I’d show them how to ask questions like, “Why did you make that correction?” or, “Can you explain your reasoning?” so they knew what productive peer conversations sounded like.

Rotate partners regularly. While letting your students choose partners can sometimes work, mixing things up gives them a chance to learn from different perspectives. It also keeps the activity fresh and prevents your students from falling into passive roles.

Building in reflection is key. After peer teaching activities, give your students a chance to share what they learned from their partner. This not only reinforces the content but also highlights the value of collaboration.

Why Peer Teaching Works

At the end of the day, peer teaching is about more than just sharing the workload. It’s about creating a community of learners. When your students take ownership of teaching each other, they gain confidence, build stronger relationships, and deepen their understanding in ways that teacher-led instruction alone can’t always reach.

I saw the power of peer learning most clearly in my Daily Language program. Watching my students correct, explain, and support each other showed me just how effective this strategy could be. Let’s talk about how you can play this ELA Truth or Dare Review Game in your middle school class. It’s a unique and interactive approach to teaching and learning that’s just perfect for the classroom. This game makes learning in your ELA class an absolute blast, and you’ll see your students get all pumped up about language arts.

Here’s the game plan:

1. Get your students into groups of 3-4, or if they prefer, they can team up in pairs. It’s all about creating a fun and collaborative vibe.
2. Hand out a recording sheet to each student. They’ll need that to jot down their answers and keep score.
3. Each group gets two sets of cards – “Truth” and “Dare” cards. I usually whip up around 18 of each. These cards are kept in separate piles.
4. Time to let the students decide who’s going first. It’s all about that friendly competition, right? During their turn, each student has a choice – they can go for a Truth card or take on the Dare card challenge.
5. When they make their choice, students read the question out loud to the group. Then they roll up their sleeves and start working on the card. They record their answers on their recording sheet. They then share their responses with the group.

Take it Further with Group Discussions

I’m all about fostering discussions in my classroom. So, after they share their answers, I tell my students to chat about whether or not they agree.

Trust me, this leads to effective discussions that take their understanding to the next level.

They earn one point for every Truth card they tackle and get right. They’re in for a bigger challenge when they decide to take on those daring Dare cards. It’s totally worth it because those can be worth 2 or 3 points each.

Now, here’s the twist – they don’t know how many points they’ve scored until they flip the card. It’s a surprise within a surprise!

After all the answers have been double-checked and the points are neatly recorded, it’s time for the moment of truth. Students grab their calculators or do some mental math, and they add up their points. The one with the most points is the winner. If you’re able to award the winners with prizes, that adds to the engagement level. However, it’s definitely not a necessity!

Grammar instruction is a crucial part of language learning. Let’s be honest, it can be a bit of a struggle for many students. Those grammar rules, different parts of speech, and sentence structures can feel overwhelming. There’s some good news though. There are some helpful tools and techniques out there that can make grammar instruction way more fun and effective. Keep reading to find out how I did just that in my classroom.

Why is Grammar Instruction So Tough?

Let’s start by acknowledging the elephant in the room – grammar can be a tough nut to crack. Here’s why:

Complexity

Grammar rules can be a lot like navigating a tricky maze. Sometimes it seems like there are more exceptions than rules. Imagine you’re in this maze, and you can easily get turned around, bump into dead ends, and encounter all these twists and turns that make the journey quite challenging and occasionally frustrating.

But don’t worry, just like in a real maze, there are ways to make it through the grammar maze! You’ll need some helpful guides, like well-structured grammar resources, and a bit of practice.

By breaking grammar into bite-size chunks, and focusing on one thing at a time students start to grasp the individual pieces and see how they all fit together. With some patience and determination, your students will unravel the complexities of grammar and become more confident language users.

Engagement

Let’s talk about engagement, or rather, the lack of it in traditional grammar lessons. Honestly, they can be a real snooze fest. Long, dreary explanations of grammar rules and endless repetitive exercises. This heavy focus on memorization can make even the most dedicated students feel like they’re trekking through a grammar desert.

The problem with these traditional lessons is that they often miss the boat on creativity and real-world connection. Grammar is portrayed as this set of strict, unyielding rules to follow. Leaving no room for personal flair and imagination. That approach can stifle curiosity, leaving students feeling disconnected and unmotivated. When you can’t see how grammar relates to your daily life, it’s hard to get excited about it.

There’s good news! I have some awesome tools that will spike engagement! These tools bring some pizzazz to grammar lessons, turning them into interactive, enjoyable experiences. The “Memorization Trap is a bit like quicksand for students. Sometimes when grammar gets tough, students end up just memorizing rules without really understanding how they work in actual sentences.

You might memorize all those fancy grammar rules temporarily, but once the test is over, poof, they vanish into thin air.

That’s because memorization without understanding is like trying to build a house without knowing how to use the tools. You’ve got the pieces, but you’re missing the know-how to put them together effectively.

Back in the day, we used to lean on foldable notes in classes. They were great, but there was a catch – middle school class periods have a knack for flying by like the wind. We all shudder when we remember trying to fold, cut, and paste notes while time ticked away faster than we’d like. Often, by the time we were ready to fill out our foldable masterpieces, the class was over!

Speaking of challenges, let’s talk about organization – or the lack of it. I experimented with folders and envelopes and I even tried binding them into neat little books. I sorted them in the order we’d use them throughout the school year, with some blank pages sprinkled in between. Some notes clung to their original pages, while others were like artistic rebels, glued or taped to the blank pages. In the end, it was a bit of a jigsaw puzzle.

That got me thinking. My students were creating good, organized notes in math class using math wheels. I decided to apply that to some ELA topics and it worked like a charm.

My Figurative Language Doodle Wheels and Figurative Language Notes and Practice Worksheets are a dynamic duo in the classroom! They’ve completely changed how I teach these figurative language elements to my students.

Figurative Language Doodle Wheels Set the Stage

Let’s start with the Figurative Language Doodle Wheels. I kick things off by introducing these wheels to the whole class. These particular doodle wheels cover six essential elements: simile, metaphor, alliteration, idiom, hyperbole, and personification.

As I walk the class through the sections of the wheel, I break down the definition of each element and throw in some examples. These examples come with relatable images that your learners can add to with their own doodles and colors.

Then, students use these wheels to practice spotting these figurative language elements in 12 engaging sentences. The color-coding system is a game-changer because it makes it a breeze for students to tell one element from another. We will do these sentences together usually. Depending on the time, I’d let my class turn and talk with a partner before sharing with the whole class which element the sentence represents.

As they go along, students get to let their creativity loose by coloring not only the elements but also the background patterns, headings, and doodle arrows. It’s a chance for them to add their own personal flair to their notes to help them remember the vocabulary they learned.

Figurative Language Notes and Practice Worksheets: Deepening the Understanding

Once the doodle wheels are completed, it’s time to move on to the Figurative Language Notes and Practice Worksheets. These help me to see where my students are confident and which elements they may need more practice with. I’ll use these pages in small groups, with partners, or have them in rotations for centers.

With the Doodle Notes pages, it’s all about organized note-taking. Each term gets its own place for a definition and examples. Some example boxes even have a bit of extra space, perfect for students to add their own unique examples.

Even though the information on the page is similar to the Doodle Wheel, I have students complete it again as a way of helping them move that information into long-term memory. You can have students complete the page using the doodle wheel as a guide, you can complete it as a class to review the figurative language topics, or you can have students complete it on their own as an informal assessment to see how they are doing with understanding the concepts.

There are five practice pages in total, one for each element (except similes and metaphors which share a page). Students can dive into similes, metaphors, alliteration, idioms, hyperboles, and personification. They apply what they’ve learned and gain the confidence to spot and use these elements in their writing.

These resources are perfect for in-class work, homework, or center activities. I’ve also included answer keys and samples to give students a helping hand, ensuring they’re on the right track.

Using the Figurative Language Doodle Wheels and Notes and Practice Worksheets has made teaching figurative language more exciting and accessible for my students. They don’t just learn to brain dump later, but rather, they leave my class with a deep understanding and their notes in hand.
