Properties of Addition & Multiplication Math Doodle Wheel Notes

This Properties of Multiplication and Addition math wheel is an interactive, doodle-style graphic organizer that makes introducing or reviewing the commutative, associative, distributive, and identity properties engaging and memorable for 5th and 6th grade students.

What is a math doodle wheel? A math doodle wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

• Take notes inside the sections of the math wheel
• Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
• Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
• Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a reference sheet or personal anchor chart.

• The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep.
• You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts.

• Pre-filled: for students who need pre-filled notes or for absentees. Answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this wheel.

Features of this 5th, 6th grade math properties resource:

1) Notes sections & examples (notes are suggestions; you can alter them or use other examples that better fit your instruction if you’d like)

2) Guided or independent practice: 20 problems in the pattern around the circle

• Students identify each property and then color the section according to the color code on the wheel.
• The color-coding (for patterned backgrounds) gives you a quick way to check student understanding.

3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, headings, and doodle arrows

Notes about coloring the background, if you use the patterned versions:

• Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time (except for the color-coded answers)….coloring the rest of the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, homework, etc.
• Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
• Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
• This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)
