Welcome to Cognitive Cardio Math! I’m Ellie, a wife, mom, grandma, and dog ‘mom,’ and I’ve spent just about my whole life in school! With nearly 30 years in education, I’ve taught:

I’m sometimes asked why we can’t just go back

I’m sometimes asked why we can’t just go back to learning maths facts or why we can’t just memorize the procedure and not have this ‘fluff’ in math class.
But does taking notes in a unique way and creating graphic organizers that can be saved as a reference for the year mean we CAN’T learn facts and we CAN’t learn procedures? Of course not!
Why wouldn’t we want to incorporate visuals and color and things that help students not just memorize facts and procedures BUT ALSO understand the meaning of the math?

Back in Sept I told myself it was ok if I didn’t

Back in Sept I told myself it was ok if I didn’t hit my running/walking miles goal this year. I was behind and could have made up the miles, but I had been neglecting other muscle groups and decided I needed to focus on getting more variety of workouts.
But part way through November, I got an amazing standing desk. And then the next week I bought a walking pad for under it.
So now, I’m doing a variety of workouts plus walking a few hours a day.
I have about 200 miles left and the part of my brain that apparently isn’t ok with not meeting the goal is saying, “Just do 20 miles a day for 10 days!”🤣 I don’t think I’ll be doing that, but you never know.
Either way, hit 1275 or not, I’m already over the 1,000 miles I did last year - I hit that goal on Dec 30 last year.
And now, what goal do I set for next year??

As the holidays approach, sometimes we finish one

As the holidays approach, sometimes we finish one math unit and feel like there’s not enough time to really get into the next one.

This is a great time for mixed math practice! Make that mixed math practice a bit more festive with holiday color by numbers that cover a variety of math concepts.

This is a great way to go back and review things that students have learned during the first part of the year and maybe preview some of the things that will be coming soon.
